Do you yoga? Let’s know some basics - By Dr. P.T. Ezhil Selvan

Yoga the magic word of the 21st century. Is it related to religion? Is doing yoga means doing some rituals?

This question does come to many minds and some are scared to go near the word yoga. Siddhars (ancient Tamil secular monks), hopefully the people who discovered the science behind yoga and herbal medicines never followed or expressed any religion. Religion was conflated into Siddha or yoga by some prehensile humans and not the founders of the art or science. They did meditate for long time seeking knowledge and wisdom of nearly everything in the world, assaying the anatomy of humans to finding ways to make the sky fireworks, opening the skull and fixing something to finding the exact instant a plant secretes a particular phytochemical.

Yoga has many parts, the major one is asana of postures. These are simple to complex exercises with breathing techniques which makes your body flexible, strong, and immune and relaxes your mind. When done regularly it will increase production of endorphins or happy hormones, which makes us healthy and reduce the ageing process.

Specific asana’s are there for specific health conditions and when regularly followed will relieve of the disorder. Anybody who could understand to what the instructor says and could execute it can do yoga, which could start from 5 years to any old age. For special people who suffer from conditions where they are not intellect like – Autism, Mental retardation, Cerebral palsy, many psychiatric conditions can also do, with better assistance and it has been proved that their condition improves considerably.

Let’s learn more on this further in the future articles.
