Health Benefits of Beetroots – By Dr. P.T. Ezhil

Beetroot is a reddish purple root vegetable, which is high in potassium, magnesium, iron, vitamin B6, A, C, nitrate, etc. This vegetable is high in sugar and can be eaten raw or can be cooked or even pickled.  Eating beetroots regularly has several health benefits, here are few of them.

Reduces blood pressure
Eating vegetables that are rich in nitrate can help reduce blood pressure and beetroots are a good source of nitrates, which get converted into nitrites and nitric oxide when consumed. These elements widen the arteries and help lower blood pressure.

Cures anemia
It is a popular myth that beetroots can cure anemia as they are reddish in colour. But the truth is that beetroot are rich in iron content and that is why it helps in the formation of haemagglutinin, which is present in blood. This helps transport oxygen and nutrients to the various body parts.

Boosts sexual health
Beetroots are known to act like natural Viagra and has been used from ancient Roman times to boosts
sexual health. Since it helps release nitric oxide in the body, it widens blood vessels and increases the blood flow to the genitals. Apart from that it also contains high concentration of boron which is a chemical compound important for the production of the sex hormone in humans.

Treats constipation
Beetroots also contain high soluble
fibre that acts as a good laxative.  It helps clean the colon and the stomach, thereby regularising bowel movement.
